The First Avenger : Captain America

News update on the recent development for the New Captain America : The First Avenger movie. Reports says that John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Fluger, Scott Porter, Mike Vogel and Chace Crawford are contenders for Captain America movie debut. Test screening is taking place this week for one of the actors to play Steve Rogers/Captain America in the comic book adaptation.

The site says:
Those known to be on the list with Krasinski include Michael Cassidy (who appeared in"Smallvile" and who tested for the Superman movie when McG was going to direct it), Patrick Fluger (one of the stars of "The 4400" who most recently appeared in the Tobey Maguire movie "Brothers"), Scott Porter (TV's "Friday Night Lights") and Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield")

Chace Crawford is also in talks to screen test, although no deal has been made. Garret Hedlund was also on the list to test but has fallen off, at least for now, due to his reps and the studio's inability to make a deal.

The studio has put the actors on 30-day holds during the testing process. This does not necessarily mean that one of the actors will land the role, as it took the studio several rounds of tests before they found Chris Hemsworth for Thor. Joe Johnston will direct the film, which Paramount Pictures will distribute on July 22, 2011.

Behold....ODIN!!!!

[ Odin's beard ]

There's big news from Asgard tonight! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the legendary Sir Anthony Hopkins has joined the cast of Thor. This isn't one of these tightly kept casting announcements either, as THR reports that he and no one else is playing Odin.

As you know for the Thor or Nordic mythology, Odin is the father of Thor and the ruler of Asgard. He's your typical white-bearded god sort, fond of wine, women, and wisdom. He's not immortal (none of the gods of Asgard are), but ages slowly, and possesses amazing powers of strength and wisdom. He famously sacrifices his eye for the foresight to prevent Ragnarok, a sadly futile act, but you can't blame a god for trying.

While a lot of people were hoping that the Brian Blessed would be Odin, you can't really get much better than Sir Hopkins. He'll add just the right amount of gravitas, but he's an actor who can still have fun in a role. I can't wait to see him go up against Loki, and teach Thor a thing or two about being a King and Ruler of Asgard.

Superman....Returns?

In possibly one of the biggest superhero movie shockers since the last one--when was the Spider-Man reboot, three weeks ago? Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that The Dark Knight and Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan has been assigned the potentially thankless task of being the latest filmmaker assigned by Warner Bros. to try to save the "Superman" franchise, in this case in a mentoring capacity to figure out the best way to proceed. Personally, Keep Brandon Routh.

Director Bryan Singer helmed the last installment Superman Returns three and a half years ago, which grossed $391 million worldwide, but wasn't seen as a hit due to its reported $270 million production budget. (Remember that the studio doesn't get 100% of those theatrical grosses.)

Since then, various names have been mentioned as possible candidates to get Superman back to the screen, most vocally comic book creator Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass), but nothing had been confirmed or definite.

This latest news seems to come out of two recent developments, the restructuring of Warner's relationship with DC Comics into a new company called DC Entertainment, headed by Diane Nelson, and the looming deadline of the estates of Superman creators Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster gaining back the entire copyright for the character in 2013. During a court hearing about the rights to Superman, Warners chairman Alan Horn said that he hoped to make another film for 2012 at the earliest but that no script was currently in development.

Some may remember that before Bryan Singer came on board, various versions of the Man of Steel were floundering in development, including one version starring Nicolas Cage to be directed by Tim Burton based on a screenplay by Kevin Smith. Even J.J. Abrams took a crack at writing a Superman screenplay with both Brett Ratner and McG attached to direct his version at one point.

It's unclear how far Nolan's role as a mentor might stretch and whether he'll just be offering some suggestions on the direction, or will be actively involved in picking the director, writers and casting for the reboot, as it's still very early in what is already being labeled "Superman 3.0."
