2 More Season for Smallville

MeeVee Exclusive! Interview with Al Gough, Executive Producer of Smallville

If there are two things that Al Gough knows, they're cops and superheroes. This talented writer has helped to bring to life such hits as Lethal Weapon 4, Showtime, and Timecop the TV series. Okay, well... let's not hold those against him. Best known as the creator, writer, and executive producer of the highly successful Smallville, Al also cowrote Spiderman 2, and is now penning the third installment of The Mummy film series, directed by Stephen Sommers.
At an overcrowded party for The CW recently, MeeVee's own tights-wearing Man of Steel, Steve Czarnecki, took a seat next to Al. In between gobbling down bites of delicious roast beef and parmesan mashed potatoes, Steve asked the Smallville creator a few long-awaited questions.
Question: With the recent success of the Green Arrow storyline and the hero-laden Justice League episode on Smallville, do you expect additional superhero spin-off series?
Answer: There aren’t any plans at the moment. I mean, the Feature Division at Warners has various superheroes in development, and a lot of it is clearing all the rights for those characters. It's one thing to get them for one episode, but to get them for an entire series is an entirely different thing. Also, I think its an issue for the (CW) network to try and figure out their identity. So I think at this moment, the stars aren’t aligning for us to do that.

Question: Every Smallville fan has heard rumors about seeing a young Bruce "Batman" Wayne do a cameo on the show. Will that day ever come?
Answer: Again, sadly, no. Batman, the Feature Division [of Warners] has. Christopher Nolan has done a fantastic job, it’s a fantastic movie. But they’ve kind of taken Batman off the table for us.
Question: How many more seasons of Smallville do you anticipate?
Answer: We all feel we have, legitimately, a good two more seasons worth of stories. Then I think it's time to pack it up to the fortress and go home.
Question: Before Brandon Routh was discovered, he used to get comments like, “Oh, you look like Superman.” He even dressed up in a Superman costume for Halloween. Have you ever thought about Tom Welling donning the costume -- just to get an idea of "what if"?
Answer: No, it's actually in his contract that he won't wear the costume. (Laughter) I’m not sure what he does at home, but on the show, he’s not wearing the costume. And again, not to conflict with the movies, [Warners Feature Film Division] doesn’t want him in the costume, and we don’t want him in the costume. [Smallville is] a different show altogether.

Question: When you’re on hiatus from Smallville, what other TV shows grab your attention?
Answer: I’m addicted to 24 and Heroes, which I really enjoy.
Question: You knew this one was coming: If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Answer:[Leans over and gets an answer from his wife] The ability to change both my kids' diapers at the same time!
