Become The Dark

Written by GL

Upcoming in this year to Playstation 3's and XBox 360's around the globe is 'THE DARKNESS' based on the very well drawn and very famous superhero of the same name.

You play Mafia hitman, Jackie Estacado who, on the eve of his 21st birthday, is suddenly possessed by the powers of The Darkness. Although this dark, supernatural entity allows him to wreak havoc on his enemies, The Darkness also has a powerful will of its own and Estacado must learn to control it. The game is going to be a blend of modern crime drama and supernatural horror through both first-person and third-person view. And good news: the environments are destructible. You supposedly go around demolishing the scenery of the New York and wreak vengeance on former Mafia employers. You then move on to fighting creatures of The Otherworld, a parallel reality where the Darkness dwells.

At its core, the Darkness is a first-person shooter, with Estacado's skills as a hitman allowing him to make use of a wide variety of guns, from basic 9mm handguns and submachine guns to high-powered assault rifles and automatic shotguns. Estacado will primarily use these in well-lit environments, when he cannot efficiently use 'Darkness Powers'.
In the dark, Estacado will be able to use his hellish ability to summon creatures and artifacts from The Otherworld and Hell itself.

Some abilities include:
  • Summoning Darklings: demon-like things that can kick some butt just for you
  • Summoning Dark Tentacles: long arm-like things that grow out of your back and pick up stuff and throw things around just for you.
  • Summoning Maw Tentacles: smaller arm-like things that should do practically the same as above
  • Creating Black Holes: deep, dark pits with which to suck annoying numbers of enemies in to The Otherworld.
Just like the whole comic to films trend, comics to games are taking on a life of their own, with all sorts of characters moving towards consoles near you for your gaming pleasure. The hardest thing is to separate the awesome from the just-made-to-make-a-little-bit-of-cash. Keep an eye out for this one, but I expect see a Spawn-Ghost Rider theme in the plot and gameplay of The Darkness.
